Kate Cooper set up Auto Italia South East in London, and teaches at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam and ArtEX in Arnhem, The Netherlands.

Kate creates work that connects to how we perceive ourselves and our bodies through digital frameworks.

The 2nd of 3 curated Lunchtime Artists Talk that took place last week with students.

Hannah Perry works with installation, sculpture, sound, and video. Creating, adopting and assembling imagery from her own life, advertising, and various subcultures, she references personal and collective memories to build a portrait of contemporary consciousness.

Desires, especially those related to femininity, are celebrated and isolated, allowing the implications of relationships moulded by networked technology and lifestyle branding, to alternate between the aspirational and the duplicitous.

Joey Holder’s exhibition Abyssal Seeker [Demersal Zone] launched at Seventeen Gallery, London on 14th April. She has also been selected to exhibit in the forthcoming British Art Show.

The exhibition represents an optimistic speculation of an acceleration to a dark future, an alternative metaphor for escaping surveillance and the cast of the net.

SOLITUDE, SOLITUDE
A visual poem exploring memory, loss and healing; been walking with pace to find calmness. Adam Muscat is a moving image artist who’s work amalgamates experimental film, sound, drawing and writing to covey collective experience, memory and stream of consciousness.

In this performance piece Anita Chanda uses her hands to tell the story of how we came together and created new work collaboratively despite being apart during lockdown.

Artists Anita Chanda and Shivani Mathur begin a visual dialogue to banish lockdown blues . What began as a response to each other’s work transferred into a journey of discovery. An experience of the primal emotion of the raw elements – air, water, fire and chlorophyll.

‘Moving Phenomena’

Moving Phenomena, was set up in an outdoor space to challenge natural phenomena, such as wind, weather, gravity or sunlight, etc. The mirror reflection, and taking the surrounding space into consideration, attemps to find a balance between industrial and natural materials.

After a year of solitude, asphyxiated by digital screens, we desired to claim back physical bodies when we felt more dissociated from them than ever. This project is a result of an open call where people around the world sent us videos where they danced alone in their space.

This work presents the correlation between repeatability and difference, and narrates the nihilistic cycle of life and death. I talked about all the repetitions and differences in behavior that I’ve seen in the current epidemic.

This is a new experimentation, searching for a way to give my paintings a physical body in a room. Interrogating the light that is able to be omnipresent in a place, I try to get different perceptions of my painted landscape through the utilisation of red light corresponding to the red colour of my monochrome.

TEMPEST
Earth and sky are in perfect harmony. No element competes with the other and the landscape appears as a unified entity. The fluidity of the water introduces a rich variety of an ever changing atmosphere.

GARDEN
The garden is a microcosm. The earthy elements determine its atmosphere and behind each tree hides a different place, part of the whole.

DESERT
The infinite landscape extends monotonously as far as the eye can see. The environment embodies absoluteness and order, imposing itself through perpetuation and totality.

This project explores a mind with schizoaffective disorder using the analogy of an archaeological investigation. It is hoped that it will get people talking about mental health issues, particularly psychosis, and in turn lead to greater understanding of those who suffer with psychosis and other mental health problems.

It’s just a taste is a poetic response to the increasing sense of isolation, biophilia and digital surveillance since COVID-19 lockdown. The artist’s attempt to becoming-algae mediates through an affective performance. The aquatic photosynthetic organism intrigues the artist for its symbiotic relations with humans and its potential as microbial intelligence.

Electra’s song is an exercise. The sea as a synthetic body: fragments of secrets, desires, living bodies, dead bodies. A life unseen. There is a voice a noise a body swimming in between boundary lines, the earth and the sky, colored surfaces. A psychic sinking that leads to a delimited space, definite monochrome frames, the control of water over the naked body.

This installation depicts bits of conversations I had in bed with my partner without his knowledge. The sheet we previously slept on is now used as a screen — the support of our bodies became the support of our voices.

We don’t know ourselves, and we can’t even see ourselves.
In this ceremony, I try to explore “I”.

My research investigates the correlation between Contemporary Art practice, Nature and Science, specifically among the different species of Morpho butterflies and birds of the rain forest and their colours interdependence related to the blue light.

The generative force of abstraction is explored in the form of multimedia painting and installation. Integrating acrylic mediums with the use of led light challenging the viewer to establish an interactive relationship with the work.

‘My girlhood fantasy suffered a huge destruction …’

It may be that I have watched too many idol dramas and pure love movies since I was a child, and many people around me are married with first love, which makes me incompatible with the feelings of some people nowadays. I made this work to remind myself that it is unrealistic to have girl fantasies to the real world and real people, the others might have a completely different context and value system. But this does not mean that I no longer fantasise, I’m learning to put in the right place.

’10 Breaths for Ostara’ is an intimate performance piece exploring direct relationship with nature’s subtle forces at work, the vegetal and the act of giving through offering breathes to the goddess Ostara in the run up to this spring equinox. Why look at birds?

I tried to use images to construct and describe a state of people’s living plight. The work involves the relationship between screens, humans and animals, trying to use some symbolism and metaphor to explore the potential problems buried in human history, memory and environment in daily life.

Claustrophobic point of view of the back of house of a restaurant in London. It is recorded in the early months of the lockdown, therefore hospitality industry was affected by the pandemic situation. Techno music and lack of natural light recreate a tense atmosphere, resembling a nightlife venue.

Communicating ‘Fine’

This work is a part of an ongoing investigation into how to communicate what is it feels like to live/deal with chronic pain, disability, rapidly declining mental-health and overwhelming external stresses in a time of isolation and uncertainty.
My first exploration into video, sound and performance art, this piece takes heavy inspiration from the art I take the most refuge in, from Francis Bacon to Slipknot.

This work uses ambience sounds and surrounding visual cues of specific sites as impetus to evoke memories from different timelines. Inspired from various sounds of London and Bangalore, the lighting of the sites are attuned to the sounds, to create an interplay between memories.

‘Wonderings of a Cadaver (Is The Cadaver Synonymous With The Ghost?)’

Here I explore the question ‘Is The Cadaver Synonymous With The Ghost?’ in a perhaps nonsensical monologue whilst considering the obsession with documenting everyday life. The plastic toys are collected from the traditional Taiwanese children’s lottery-game Chuō chuō lè.

Coral Bleaching

The three-channel video, Empathy, was filmed in Hainan Island, China. It provides the first-hand visual representation of seabed structure and the scale of bleaching. The serious nature of coral bleaching exemplifies the consequences of climate change, it is possible to trigger positive changes which impede environmental damage.

I hope this can provide the audience a different way of observation like AI or machine. SCALAR OSCILLATION

This is a screening of a two screen video installation created in collaboration with Arts at CERN Institute and FACT Liverpool.

The human phenomenology of time is no longer adequate to how we organize, inflect and orient the systems we have created. Scalar Oscillations makes a distinction between time as it functions in science and temporality, the daily experience of time’s apparent flow from imminent future to receding past.

This is a recording of a lecture that Diann Bauer & Helen Hester (founding members of the ‘Laboria Cuboniks’ collective that developed the acclaimed manifesto ‘Xenofeminism: A Politics for Alienation’) which took place in 2020 for Oktoberdans (a contemporary dance biennale in Bergen, Norway).

Xenofeminism is grounded in ideas of technomaterialism, anti-naturalism, and gender abolitionism.
